SERENE CERAMICS is a ceramic art and design studio that works hard to change hearts, minds and habits. We believe ceramics has the power to do more than sell a product. It can make a difference through altering perceptions, emotions and actions for the good of us all. From texture, temperature, size and function, a good pot conveys the individual character and culture of the potter with the nature of his materials. We also believe in being positive and focused about what we love, and we love what we do.
Ceramics - It's the craftsmanship of risk. Out of all the fields of art, ceramics is the most demanding and unpredictable. Yet, without failure you never go forward. Technique is important. Skills enable a vision to become reality. So education has always been of the highest priority. To learn from the best and to understand the materials. A good clay is half heart, half perspiration.
There is an impossibility with ceramics. Just when you think you've got it figured out, something will come along and burst your bubble. It keeps you humble, interested, challenged, and enthralled.
In our studio we follow the artistic ceramics practice called 'mingei'. A Japanese word meaning 'Art of the people' (min=people, gei=art). This started in Japan but is not tied to Japan. It is a worldwide studio practice and principle. It is humanistic art. Mingei establishes function in use as well as beauty in function. Yet, function doesn't belong to the object. An object is an object. The user makes the function.
"We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love... and then we return home."
- Aboriginal proverb.
